On Saturday, 2nd October the racecourse welcomed volunteers from ABF The Soldiers’ Charity (who have been our nominated bucket collectors for the beer festival since 2010), to raise much needed funds for the Servicemen and women, veterans and families that the Charity helps in times of need. The charity raised a combined total of £2,912 from the collections and proceeds from their pop-up shop sales.
Ascot Racecourse has been proud supporters of the charity since 2010. In 2013 the racecourse expanded its support during Royal Ascot to include the three Armed Forces principal single Service charities - Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, ABF The Soldiers’ Charity and the RAF Benevolent Fund. Since then, over £275,000 has been raised for the three charities via collections and contributions from certain food and drink sold during Royal Ascot.
This year, the three charities, alongside Prostate Cancer UK, Marie Curie and Care Radio, also received a share of the £1.25 million in profits donated by the Betting & Gaming Council’s (BGC) members from the Britannia Stakes run on the Thursday of this year’s Royal Ascot. Thanks go to Flutter, bet365, Entain, William Hill, Kindred, BetVictor, Betway, Rank Group, AnzoGroup and 888, plus the Tote, Fitzdares and Sporting Index who all signed up to this amazing fundraising initiative.
In recognition of this support and donation, Brigadier Peter Walker OBE, Chairman of ABF’s Berkshire Branch and representative for the three charities, commissioned a glass triptych which he presented to Michael Dugher and Michael Denoual, the CEO and Deputy Director of Communications for the BGC who represented the council’s members. Our 2.40pm race was also named “The ABF/BGC Cumberland Lodge Stakes” in recognition of the initiative.
Peter also presented a commemorative piece to Alastair Warwick, Managing Director of Ascot Racecourse, in kind recognition of Ascot Racecourse’s support over the years.
