JOCKEYS TALK ABOUT THE DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP
Emma-Jayne Wilson, the riding sensation of Canada who has had 78 winners at the current Woodbine meet is very excited. When she first had the call about riding at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup back in March it seemed a long way away. The style of racing is different from what Emma-Jane is used to at home and the track at Ascot is also different, but it is still horses racing with four legs with a jockey on their backs.
Hayley Turner, who along with Emma-Jayne Wilson will become the first female jockey to participate in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, also cant wait she is looking forward to a great experience. She looks to have a good couple of rides in the last two races.
Doug Whyte, the Hong Kong-based South African jockey, also thinks it is great to be back and see the real big facelift at Ascot. It will be interesting to get back on the track - it looks fantastic, it is certainly one of the best tracks I have ridden over and the turf seems as green and lush as ever. Australian rider Glen Boss, partner of the legendary triple Melbourne Cup heroine Makybe Diva and riding in his first Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, he loves the idea of looking back on your career and being able to say you rode at Ascot and against the best jockeys in the world will be wonderful. He has never been here before and cannot wait to tangle with the guys. Japanese ace Yuichi Fukunaga is having his second European riding venture, having previously been in 1999.
The Great Britain and Ireland team is headed by jockey captain Jamie Spencer, the 2005 champion jockey in Britain.
He is joined by Michael Kinane, one of the most successful jockeys of all time, Hayley Turner, the first female jockey to be champion apprentice in Britain, Ryan Moore, who looks set to become champion jockey for the first time this year, Seb Sanders and Robert Winston, Team manager for the Great Britain and Ireland team is Jason Weaver, the former jockey turned television pundit who rode more than 1,000 winners including the 1995 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot on Double Trigger. Frankie Dettori is jockey captain for the Rest of the World team.
The popular Italian will be joined by Glen Boss from Australia, regular partner of the three-time Melbourne Cup heroine Makybe Diva, Yuichi Fukunaga, one of Japans leading riders, French ace Gerald Mosse, Doug Whyte, the South African who has been champion jockey in Hong Kong for the past six season, and Emma-Jayne Wilson, the riding phenomenon from Canada, who became both the first female rider and only the third apprentice to win to win the riding title at Woodbine last year.
Michael Roberts is team manager for the Rest of the World team. The 52-year-old was champion jockey in Britain in 1992 as well as 11-times champion jockey in his native South Africa. He rode close to 4,000 winners and won the 1988 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot on Mtoto.
