Weaver Takes up Ladbrokes Shap Up Challenge!
Jason Weaver reprises his now familiar role of manager for the Great Britain & Ireland Team at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup on Saturday week (12th August), which this year will open with the inaugural Ladbrokes Shergar Cup Duel, a match race between himself and counterpart Michael Roberts, manager of the Rest of the World Team. At stake are 5 bonus points towards the annual battle for the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup.
The big question now, however, is whether Weavers mount will be able to take the strain! Whilst former UK and South African champion jockey Roberts has kept himself trim riding out at his South African training base, Weaver has, by his own admission, not found lifting the At The Races microphone quite such a physically demanding regime, and weighed in at 11st 10lb over the weekend.
Trainer Brendan Powell is providing two sprinters for the six furlong contest in Pic Up Sticks and Who’s Winning, both of whom have been in winning form in recent weeks. They will carry weights that correspond to their current handicap marks, with Pic Up Sticks set to give over a stone to his stable companion.
Although Weaver has been riding out regularly ever since the Duel was announced, Ladbrokes have stepped into the fray to give further incentive to the classic winning jockey, and are sponsoring him in aid of the Injured Jockeys Fund for £50 per 1lb lost between now and the weigh-in at Ascot on Thursday 10th August. The weigh-in will take place at the pre-event team selection press conference and draw and will be shown live on At The Races.
The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is really established now and Ladbrokes delighted to be part of it as sponsors of the Ladbrokes Shergar Cup Duel and official bookmakers to the event. They will be at the draw, pricing up all the races and hopefully handing over a decent sized cheque on behalf of a sylph-like Jason.
The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is the worlds premier international jockeys tournament, with six top jockeys from Great Britain & Ireland taking on six international superstars from the Rest of the World over six races on the new Ascot track.
